Tables of indicators

1998-99, 1999-2000

This is the third annual publication providing performance indicators (PIs) relating to higher education (HE). It is based on data from the academic years 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

The indicators are given for the 169 publicly funded institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom. The institutions included are those that existed in 1999-2000, although some names have been updated to reflect the current position.

They are designed to provide reliable information on the nature and performance of the higher education sector in the UK, and a consistent set of measures of this performance. This will contribute to a greater public accountability by the sector, as well as ensuring that policy decisions can be made on the basis of consistent and reliable information.

The indicators fall into five categories. Tables T1 and T2 provide access indicators; tables T3 and T4 provide indicators of the non-continuation rates of institutions; table T5 gives the projected outcomes for students who are at an institution, and the related measure of efficiency. Table T6, which is published only for Welsh institutions, provides module completion rates for part-time students; and table R1 provides indicators of research output.

Extra details for performance indicators

Two extra tables, T1c and T2c are now available on the web. These provide access indicators for full-time sub-degree entrants. (Tables T1 and T2 in HEFCE publication 01/69 do not provide these figures separately.)

We have only included institutions where there are at least 20 relevant entrants. Where the information on a particular indicator is only available for less than 20 entrants at an institution, the data for that indicator has been omitted. The UK and country totals are based on the institutions included, and so are generally less than the totals in Tables T1 and T2.
