Consultation on proposal for Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
In July 2003 we published a consultation document (HEFCE 2003/36) built on the proposals for Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning set out in our strategic plan (HEFCE 2003/35) and the Government's higher education White Paper 'The Future of Higher Education (Adobe PDF 611K)'.
The consultation period ended on 24 October 2003.
The consultation revealed broad support for the CETL initiative, tempered by some reservations on particular aspects. Of the 140 responses received from institutions, representative bodies and other organisations, some 75 per cent responded positively to the overall aims and objectives of the CETL proposals. Many institutions would have preferred a general distribution of funds to all institutions on the model of the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund. Nevertheless, they have welcomed the flexibility in the proposed funding levels and the opportunity for institutions to define CETLs to reflect their particular ideas of excellent practice rather than to conform to a single model. The proposal to badge proposed centres that are selected for, but not successful at, the second stage of bidding received little support. It was widely criticised as unhelpful and misleading.
The responses were helpful in shaping the policy initiative and the preparatory work on the invitation to bid. A summary of responses received and next steps is available to download below.
