Rewarding and developing staff in higher education: interim report by the HEFCE
In autumn 2000 the Government announced additional resources to help higher education institutions recruit, retain and develop staff, and modernise management processes in the sector. An interim evaluation of the impact made by this initiative is available, along with two R & D reports that informed the evaluation.

International student mobility study: invitation to tender announced
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) invite tenders for a three-part study into UK students spending time abroad, covering the types and range of student mobility, and the reasons underlying student choice.

The 2002 edition of 'Profiles of higher education institutions' is now available from HEFCE Publications, price £50. It has over 300 pages of text and graphical data on the higher education sector in England. As with previous editions, it contains a wealth of information and data on universities and higher education colleges in England, including individual summaries of their development, students, resources and quality assessment. Who does best at University?
Bahram Bekhradnia, currently Director of Policy at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and shortly to take up a position as Director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, and John Thompson, data analyst at HEFCE - argue that performance in higher education has a close connection to previous attainment as measured by entry qualifications. The current recruitment level of academic staff in higher education in the United Kingdom is likely to be sufficient to maintain overall current numbers, but big rises in intakes would be needed to increase staff numbers, according to a study carried out by the HEFCE.
