Review of higher education in Cumbria

A report on the further development of higher education in Cumbria was published today (Thursday 15 May) following a review conducted by Sir Brian Fender on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The report identifies the need to raise the profile of higher education in Cumbria and develop further the collaborative networks between higher education and further education institutions. The report makes a strong case for the development of higher education as a major factor in the social and economic regeneration of the region.

Commenting on the report, Sir Howard Newby, Chief Executive of the HEFCE, said:

'We warmly welcome this report which highlights the important role that higher education plays in Cumbria.

'We will continue to work closely with the higher education institutions in the region, the Learning and Skills Council, the Government Office for the North West and Cumbria County Council to take forward the recommendations in the report. Implementation of the plan as far as funding from HEFCE is concerned will depend on the availability of resources'.
