HEFCE's response to the ten-year science and innovation investment framework

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) welcomes the ten-year framework for science and innovation.

Commenting on its publication, HEFCE's Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer, Rama Thirunamachandran, said:

"The publication of a long term strategy for supporting UK research is a significant step forward in helping to develop and sustain a dynamic HE sector which holds a strong position among world leaders. We particularly welcome the Government's continuing support for the dual support system of public funding for research - by the HE funding councils and the Research Councils - as well as the central role which the Government expects HEFCE to play in the delivery of the strategy.

"The additional £244 million funding to HEFCE for research and knowledge transfer by 2007/08, includes additional quality-related research funding (QR), funding to underpin research supported by charities, and the Higher Education Innovation Fund resource. This will provide a welcome boost to economic prosperity and to the expansion and dissemination of knowledge. The additional funding announced today will help to put HE research on to a more sustainable footing."
