HEFCE's new strategic plan published

HEFCE today published its strategic plan for 2006 to 2011. The plan has been through extensive consultation with higher education institutions and a wide range of stakeholders.

In developing the plan, HEFCE has focused on:

  • the student experience
  • social inclusion
  • sustaining world-class research
  • supporting the wider roles of universities and colleges within the economy and society.

Steve Egan, HEFCE's acting Chief Executive, said:

"Many different partners have contributed to the development of the plan. Our approach over the five years covered by the plan will be to build on the many strengths of a sector that is already diverse and dynamic, while identifying and responding to the social, economic and environmental challenges that we need to face together".

A key feature of the strategic plan is that the Council places great importance on institutional autonomy and reducing the regulatory burden on universities and colleges.

The strategic plan contains 22 key performance targets by which the successful delivery of the plan will be measured.

The 2006-11 Strategic plan (HEFCE 2006/13) is on the HEFCE web-site. HEFCE held a consultation on the strategic plan in November; a summary of responses to it, and details of how the Council has taken these into consideration, is also available.
