Dear Vice-Chancellor or Principal
Consultation on the transfer of the Dance and Drama Award Scheme to HEFCE mainstream funding
The Dance & Drama Awards (DaDA) are scholarships for talented students to undertake training in performance at both FE and HE levels. The HE stream is administered by HEFCE on behalf of the Department for Education & Skills (DfES). The scheme provides places in private dance and/or drama schools, via indirect funding through connected higher education institutions. Ministers have recently decided to transfer the HE element of the scheme to HEFCE mainstream funding. I am writing to seek views on the best mechanism for the transfer. The deadline for responses is 1 June 2003.
The HE element of the DaDA scheme currently funds around 900 places in nine private schools. We expect to have a total of £6 million available to fund places after the transfer. The scope of the transfer is therefore very limited, and we expect the consultation mainly to be of interest to those private DaDA providers and their connected institutions already involved in the scheme.
Annex A provides a rationale for the allocation method, and details of the proposed bidding process. Annex B summarises the issues for consultation.
If you would like further details on the proposals, or wish to discuss any element, please contact Elaine Kelly (e-mail E.Kelly@hefce.ac.uk or tel 0117 931 7023).
Yours sincerely
Howard Newby
Chief Executive
