Dear Vice-Chancellor or Principal
Higher Education Innovation Fund round 2: outcomes
1. This letter announces the outcomes of the second round of funding under the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF). Awards are listed in Annex A.
2. HEIF is a joint initiative by HEFCE and the Office of Science and Technology. Funds are awarded to support universities and colleges in their third stream engagement with business and community partners, increasing their capability to respond to the needs of business, public services and the wider community, and to transfer knowledge.
3. In February 2004 institutions applied for funds under the second round of HEIF, in response to an invitation in HEFCE 2003/58. Proposals were assessed by four separate groups, providing input to an advisory board chaired by Sir Keith O'Nions, the Director General of the Research Councils. A total of 124 awards were made, 46 of which involved collaboration between higher education institutions.
4. Overall, £186 million has been allocated for the two years 2004-05 and 2005-06. Around £16 million of this total will fund a network of 22 new centres for knowledge exchange activity, which were proposed in the Government's White Paper on the future of higher education. The centres will provide specialised shared services for business and community partners and will be exemplars of good practice.
5. Further details on HEIF are available on the web at www.hefce.ac.uk under Business and the community.
Yours sincerely
Rama Thirunamachandran
Director, Research and Knowledge Transfer, HEFCE
