Biography and registered interests
Susan Lapworth is Director of Regulation and Assurance at HEFCE. She is responsible for developing the Council’s approach to its role as lead regulator for higher education in England. The Directorate’s work ranges from the development and operation of the Gateway processes for new providers, the publication of the Register of Higher Education Providers, and the effective operation of HEFCE’s approach to the identification and management of risk in individual providers. Since September 2014 Susan has been leading work on HEFCE’s new operating model for quality assessment.
Susan’s career in the higher education sector began with a specialisation in quality and standards assurance. She has worked in a range of higher education providers – including pre- and post-1992 universities, a conservatoire, and providers with substantial distance learning provision. Prior to joining HEFCE, Susan was an Academic Registrar, holding responsibility for the development of institutional strategy and policy, and for teams working to improve services to students.
