Alastair Balls is the Chairman of the Centre for Life, a sustainable science village operating in collaboration with the Universities of Newcastle and Durham. Alastair read economics at St Andrews and Manchester and worked for a number of government departments as well as in regional government. More recently he served as a member of the board of the Independent Television Commission. Alastair was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1994 for services to urban regeneration. He is Chairman of the Alzheimer's Society and chairs the Trustees of the Northern Rock Foundation (a charity funded by the Northern Rock Bank). He lives in Northumberland and is married with a daughter and a son.
