John joined New College Durham in August 1998, having previously worked as Vice Principal at Cambridge Regional College for ten years. Prior to entering further education, John worked as a lawyer in Local Government.
As Principal, John has been keenly interested in developing the college's role in the community and extending the range of activities and partnerships through which the college works. New College Durham was one of the first two colleges to be granted foundation degree awarding powers in July 2011. John is Chair of the Mixed Economy Group of colleges offering significant amounts of higher education and is a Board Mmeber of the Association of Colleges.
John was made a CBE in June 2010.
Date appointed to the Board: 1 January 2009 for three years and re-appointed until 31 December 2014.
