Malcolm Grant is a New Zealander and read law at Otago University. His academic career has included posts at Southampton University, UCL and Cambridge University (including as Pro Vice-Chancellor), and then as President and Provost of UCL from 2003. Professor Grant is a barrister and an environmental lawyer. He has served as Chairman of the Local Government Commission for England, of the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission, and of the Russell Group. He is currently chairman of the NHS Commissioning Board, a UK Business Ambassador, a member of the UKTI Strategy Board, President of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics and a member of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee.
He lives in London.
Professor Grant has written widely on topics including planning, property, and environmental law and the regulation of biotechnology. He is a member of the Bench of Middle Temple, and an honorary member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He was awarded the CBE in 2003 for services to planning law and local government.
Date appointed to the Board: 1 December 2008 for three years; reappointed 2011 for three years.
