This page provides a summary of comparisons we make in our re-creation of Higher Education Statistics Survey (HESES) (the HESES11 re-creation) which we carry out for monitoring purposes. This information is aimed at those universities responsible for making student data returns.

The difference is calculated by summing the 'Contract range holdback', 'Consolidated 2010-11 contract range holdback recovered by institution' in the HESES11 grant adjustments report (hHBK worksheet) and subtracting from the total the equivalent amounts in the 'Report on adjustments to grant for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation' (HBK worksheet).
The difference in total contract range grant adjustments for 2011-12 as a percentage of total teaching funding for 2011-12 is calculated by dividing the difference in 'Total contract range grant adjustments for 2011-12' by the sum of the '2011-12 Total teaching funding' and taking the absolute value. This value can be found in Table A of the final issue of institutions' 2011-12 grant tables.
The difference between medical and dental holdback is calculated by subtracting 'Medical and dental holdback' in the HESES11 grant adjustments report (hHBK worksheet) from the 'Medical and dental holdback' in the 'Report on adjustments to grant for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation' (HBK worksheet).
The difference in total ASN grant adjustments for 2011-12 is calculated by summing the 'ASN funding recovered by institution', '2010-11 ELQ safety net ASN funding to be held back from 2012-13', 'ASN funding to be held back from institution' in the HESES11 grant adjustments report (hHBK worksheet) and subtracting the sum of the equivalent amounts in the 'Report on adjustments to grant for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation' (HBK worksheet).
The difference in total student number control adjustments for 2011-12 is calculated by summing the 'Provisional student number control grant adjustment' and 'Further reduction for 2010-11 over-recruitment' in the HESES11 grant adjustments report (hHBK worksheet) and subtracting the sum of the equivalent amounts in the 'Report of adjustments to grant for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation' (HBK worksheet).
The difference in total co-funded grant adjustments for 2011-12 is calculated by summing the 'Co-funded core funding to be held back from institution', ' Co-funded funding recovered by institution' and ' Co-funded ASN funding to be held back from institution' in the 'HESES11 grant adjustments report' (hHBK worksheet) and subtracting the difference from the sum of the equivalent amounts in the ‘Report on adjustments to grant for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation’ (HBK worksheet).
The difference in total teaching funding grant adjustments 2011-12 is calculated by summing the difference in 'Total contract range grant adjustments for 2011-12', difference between 'Medical and dental holdback', difference in 'Total ASN grant adjustments' and difference in 'Total student number control adjustments for 2011-12'.
Students with undetermined completion status are all HEFCE-funded students (HESTYPE = HOMEF) that are included in the HESES re-creation (HESEXCL = 0) with 'year of programme of study not yet completed, but has not failed to complete' (FUNDCOMP = 3).
The difference in total illustrative 2012-13 initial phase out funding (mainstream) is calculated by subtracting the total 'Initial phase-out funding 2012-13' in the 'Calculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for mainstream FTEs' (hMST worksheet) from the equivalent amount in the ‘Calculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for mainstream FTEs using HESES re-creation’ (MST worksheet).
The difference in total illustrative 2012-13 initial phase out funding (co-funded) is calculated by subtracting the total 'Initial phase-out funding 2012-13' in the 'Calculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for co-funded FTEs' (hCOF worksheet) from the equivalent amount in the ‘Recalculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for co-funded FTEs’ (COF worksheet).
The difference is calculated by summing the 'Widening access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds: full-time', 'Widening access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds: part-time', 'Widening access and improving provision for disabled students' amounts in the '2012-13 WP allocations based on FTEs from HESES11' report (hWP worksheet), and subtracting from the total the equivalent amounts in the report on the 'Re-calculated 2012-13 WP allocations based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation' (WP worksheet).
The difference in the total WP funding for 2012-13 as a percentage of the total original 2012-13 WP funding is calculated by dividing the difference in the 'Total widening participation (WP) funding for 2012-13' by the sum of the 'Widening access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds: full-time', 'Widening access for students from disadvantaged backgrounds: part-time' and 'Widening access and improving provision for disabled students' amounts in the '2012-13 WP allocation based on FTEs from HESES11' report (hWP worksheet).
The difference is calculated by summing the 'Improving retention: full-time' and 'Improving retention: part-time' amounts in the '2012-13 Improving retention allocation based on FTEs from HESES11' report (hTESS worksheet), and subtracting from the total the equivalent amounts in the report on the re-calculated 2012-13 Improving retention allocation based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation (TESS worksheet).
The difference in the total IR element of the TESS allocation for 2012-13 as a percentage of the total original 2012-13 IR element of the TESS allocation is calculated by dividing the difference in the 'Total (IR) element of the teaching enhancement and student success (TESS) allocation 2012-13 based on original HESES11' by the sum of the 'Improving retention: full-time' and 'Improving retention: part-time' amounts in the '2012-13 Improving retention allocation based on FTEs from HESES11' report (hTESS worksheet).
The difference in the Erasmus fee compensation for 2011-12 is calculated by subtracting the total Erasmus fee compensation adjustment in the ‘Calculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for mainstream FTEs’ report (hMST worksheet) from the equivalent amount in the 'Calculation of 2011-12 funding rates and initial phase-out funding for mainstream FTEs using HESES re-creation’ report (MST worksheet).
