HESES11 re-creation funding worksheets

This page details how to re-create the funding worksheet data that are provided as part of our re-creation of Higher Education Statistics Survey (HESES) (the HESES11 re-creation) which we carry out for monitoring purposes. This information is aimed at those universities responsible for making student data returns.

The 'HESES11 re-creation funding worksheets' are tables provided in the HESES11 re-creation workbook.

It includes descriptions of how to re-create data using the individualised file for the funding worksheets listed in the table of contents below.

Further detail on the different types of FTE that contribute to the recalculation of 2012-13 WP and improving retention can be found in 'FTEs used for the re-calculated 2012-13 WP and improving retention allocations' (WPTESSFTE worksheet).

The figures shown in each of the reports are sourced from the HESES11 re-creation and the final 2011-12 individual grant tables. We may also use the final 2021-13 individual grant tables for WP and TESS re-calculations.

Funding conditional upon delivery of growth: Actual FTEs (HEFCE-fundable)

The students used to derive 'Actual FTEs (HEFCE-fundable)' can be identified by selecting:

  • HESEXCL = 0
  • HESCOMP = 4
  • HESTYPE = HOMEF

'Actual FTEs (HEFCE-fundable)' can be found by summing HESESFTE and dividing by 100 for these students.

Medical and dental holdback: FTE from HESES11 re-creation

The students used to derive 'FTE from HESES11 re-creation' can be identified by selecting:

  • HESMED = 1
  • HESTYPE = HOMEF
  • HESEXCL = 0
  • HESCOMP = 4

'FTE from HESES11 re-creation' can be found by summing HESESFTE and dividing by 100 for these students.

Student number control for 2011-12: Recruited numbers from Table 6 of HESES11 re-creation

The students used to derive 'Recruited numbers from Table 6 of HESES11 re-creation' can be identified by selecting SNCPOP = 1.

2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation

'2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation' are identified by summing the FTE of students in each combination of length (LENGTH), level (HESLEVEL), mode (HESMODE) and price group. Examples of the assignment to different price groups are described below.

Recalculation of assumed fee income for 2011-12 using the HESES11 re-creation (F11 worksheet)

2011-12 Estimated FTE students

‘2011-12 Estimated FTE students’ are identified by summing students included in the estimated FTE students headcount (HESFHC) in each combination of level (HESLEVEL), mode (HESMODE) and price group.

Note that the ‘UG’ level consists of foundation degrees (HESLEVEL = FD) and undergraduate excluding foundation degrees (HESLEVEL = UGX). 

Total fee income

To calculate 'Total fee income' for each combination of mode and level, sum across HESAFEE for the required level (HESLEVEL) and mode (HESMODE). For example, to replicate the 'Total fee income' in the part-time postgraduate category, select:

  • HESMODE = PT
  • HESLEVEL = PGT
  • sum HESAFEE.

The 'UG' level consists of foundation degrees (HESLEVEL = FD) and undergraduate excluding foundation degrees (HESLEVEL = UGX).

2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation

The students used to derive '2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation' can be identified for each combination of mode (HESMODE) and level (HESLEVEL) by selecting:

  • HESEXCL = 0
  • HESCOMP = 4
  • HESTYPE = HOMEF.

'2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation' can be found by summing HESESFTE and dividing by 100 for these students. This total will match the '2011-12 FTEs from HESES11 re-creation' total on the standard resource table (STD worksheet).

Re-calculated 2012-13 WP allocations based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation (WP worksheet) and Re-calculated 2012-13 improving retention allocation based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation (TESS worksheet)

The following elements are partially informed by the HESES re-creation. The WPTESSFTE worksheet provides the contribution of the HESES re-creation to these figures.

The WPTESSFTE worksheet contains the detailed breakdown of the '2012-13 Base FTEs' and the '2011-12 non-mainstream FTEs' as used in the Re-calculated 2012-13 WP allocations based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation (WP worksheet) and Re-calculated 2012-13 improving retention allocation based on FTEs from the HESES11 re-creation (TESS worksheet).

The 'HESES11 re-creation FTEs' element of this figure for part-time undergraduates is calculated by selecting:

  • HESCOMP = 4
  • HESEXCL = 0
  • HESLEVEL = UGX, FD.
