These pages list information, advice and guidance for skills advisers working on behalf of business clients who are looking to develop higher-level skills in their workforce.
We list services available regionally and nationally. These resources cover a broad base of information, including: how to identify the need for higher-level skills, how to develop training solutions, what funding is available, and a range of useful services that universities and colleges offer in this area.

National services
Some universities have funding from HEFCE to work with business in specific sectors on a national basis. This means they can offer bespoke training and funding support to employers who need to work across regions:
- Open University
The Open University is working closely with employers to develop and deliver courses tailored to their performance needs in the health and social care, information technology and telecoms sectors. - Cogent (Sector Skills Council)
Cogent is working with five universities to develop industry-standard foundation degrees – delivered flexibly - within the nuclear, chemical, polymer, petroleum and bioscience industries. - Skillset (Sectors Skills Council)
The Sector Skills Council for creative media industries is developing flexible training, including short courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
There are also national groups of HEIs and FECs, funded to work in partnership as Lifelong Learning Networks, to help people with vocational qualifications and training access HE:
- National Arts Learning Network
Working closely with Sector Skills Councils, the network will develop additional qualifications at all levels, which meet the needs of employers in the creative industries. - Vetnet
Vetnet focuses on providing opportunities for students on vocational courses to progress into and through veterinary-related higher education (HE). The network includes not just veterinary practice, but also animal care and welfare, and various professions allied to veterinary practice, such as veterinary nursing, veterinary technicians, and technologists and physiotherapists.
