Many of HEFCE's functions will be continued by the Office for Students, the new regulator of higher education in England, and Research England, the new council within UK Research and Innovation.

The centre will act as a place for industry and academia to interact. It will provide crucial infrastructure for emerging research opportunities.

The centre will be housed in a new building as part of the industrial cluster along the north bank of the river Tyne in Newcastle. It will comprise a high-specification engineering laboratory and a small provision of office and support space.

The research centre will provide significant and distinctive research assets that are not available in the UK on this scale (such assets currently exist only in small-scale laboratories). The centre will also develop highly skilled graduates (through project work), and so address key skill shortages for UK industry.
