Specifically, the project will develop and promote seven new higher apprenticeship (HA) degree programmes during a twelve-month pilot phase with an additional three months for research and evaluation. These will include:

  • five undergraduate HA programmes delivered over a fast-tracked two-year period, resulting in the award of a BA/BEng
  • two postgraduate HA programmes delivered over one year, resulting in the award of a diploma with the option to top-up to an MA/MSc.

Apprentices will be recruited by the employer and paid the National Minimum Wage. They will attend HEIs for short blocks of teaching in order to obtain their qualification.

Because the process of higher apprenticeships with degrees embedded is still evolving, this project will help to develop good practice and regulation in this area, thus having the potential to impact on the national system.

The project is led by Southampton Solent University in collaboration with Creative Skillset and delivered in partnership with:

  • HEI partners: Ravensbourne, the University of Bradford, Middlesex University and Norwich University of the Arts
  • advisory partners: the National Centre for Universities and Business and GuildHE
  • employer partners including Sony, the BBC, Sky News and Haymarket.
