Birmingham University's bid to become a Centre for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning in Mental Health stems from collaboration between its 6 Schools of Education, Health Sciences, Medicine, Public Policy, Psychology, and Social Sciences. It is founded upon:

  • the need to develop a community of interdisciplinary mental health practice that trancends the boundaries of higher education, professional territories and health and social care employers
  • A track record in providing a range of excellent inderdisciplinary mental health teaching and learning opportunities to more than 2000 students
  • A dynamic partnership with internal and external collaborators including a mental health service user lead network (SURESEARCH), the Heart of England mental health research hub, the mental health in higher education (mhhe) and National Health Service University.
This proposal seeks to expand and enhance the design and delivery of existing and developing programmes. Through collaborative partnerships it will promote their effective dissemination across the higher education and mental health sectors. The CETL also seeks to work with academic institutions in order to heighten awareness about how to support students with mental health needs to ensure their active and continuous participation in higher education and employment.
