Purpose of initiative

The main objective of this initiative is to encourage CVE (defined by the Council as activity which contributes to the updating of employment-related skills and knowledge to meet the needs of employees and employers) to become an integral part of an institution's overall strategy. In particular funding was aimed at meeting the lifetime learning needs of people at work; expanding the availability of flexible teaching, learning and accreditation for people at work and encouraging an active role for HEIs in wealth creation and in regional and local development

In 1994 insititutions were invited to submit business plans for the CVE activities for 1995-96 to 1998-99. (Circular 28/94). In April 1995 the outcome of this competition was announced in Circular 11/95 . Institutions were banded into four categories:

  • Category A Maximum allocation of £300,000 per year (29 institutions)
  • Category B Maximum allocation of £145,000 per year (29 institutions)
  • Category C Maximum allocation of £100,000 per year (37 institutions)
  • Category D No Allocation (20 institutions)
