HEFCE provides information on students
Universities and colleges can now find out more about the kind of students they are attracting, through data from the HEFCE.
The Council has been developing geodemographic techniques for investigating participation and patterns of access across the sector. As part of this work, statistics have been produced for each institution, to give a guide to the different types of neighbourhood that its students come from.
Earlier research revealed close links between neighbourhood type and participation rates, with students from the most affluent areas seven times more likely to enter higher education than those from poor neighbourhoods.
The latest statistics also show the changes in geodemographic profiles over recent years, and give a comparison with sector averages.
Individualised geodemographic statistics are available for each HEI. To avoid over-burdening institutions with data, these will not be issued automatically.
Institutions that would like copies of their statistics should contact Joanne Iles at the HEFCE, tel 0117 931 7365, e-mail j.iles@hefce.ac.uk, giving a contact name and postal address.
