Updated information on the Refurbishing Research Laboratories Initiative
Following the Government's recent announcement of extra funding for research as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review, the HEFCE and DENI have decided to delay the launch of the next round of the Laboratory Refurbishment Initiative. This will provide time for ongoing discussions with the Office of Science and Technology to produce a co-ordinated approach to the allocation process; as additional infrastructure funding was provided to both arms of the dual-support system.
We will make a further announcement later in the summer that clarifies the level of funding available and the mechanism for allocation. However, it is anticipated that we will build on the success of the first round of the HEFCE/DENI scheme.
We realise that this news will initially come as a disappointment to those preparing bids, but hope that the longer-term benefits of a co-ordinated approach by the Funding and Research Councils are appreciated. Every effort will be made to keep the bidding timetable as short as is commensurate with the efficient and effective allocation of public money, and we hope still to be able to allocate funding in the academic year 1998-99.
