Islamic studies: the way forward in the UK

A conference hosted by HEFCE at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London on 17 April 2008, 1000 - 1600.

The conference addressed the following themes:

  • relationships between public and private institutions
  • the link between academic study and the professional development of faith leaders
  • improving accessibility for the subject
  • potential networks and support for staff
  • discussion about a European centre of excellence for Islamic studies in the UK.

A conference report will be available in May.

Professor David Eastwood, HEFCE Chief Executive, provided the keynote address. In the afternoon, Dr John Selby, HEFCE Director of Education and Participation, gave a presentation to put the proposed programme of work in context.

Background

The Government designated Islamic studies a strategically important subject in June 2007. Since then we have worked with stakeholders to understand more about this wide-ranging subject and the issues it faces.
