The HEFCE Annual Conference is the main forum for heads of universities and colleges, and key partners, to meet and discuss major developments in higher education.

The theme of the 2009 conference was:

Current challenges for higher education and their future implications

David Ward, past President of the American Council on Education, gave an international view of the global challenges. Delegates were invited to contribute to discussion on current issues. On the second day the chairs of HEFCE's Strategic Committees led discussions on longer-term themes. The Secretary of State gave the final presentation.
