'The Future of Higher Education' and higher education funding for 2003-04 to 2005-06

HEFCE welcomes the publication of the Government's White Paper on the future of higher education. Commenting on the document, Sir Howard Newby, Chief Executive of HEFCE, said: 'We welcome the publication of the Government's strategic vision, which will have a far-reaching impact on the future of higher education in this country. Universities and colleges are a success, and many of their activities are world class. We look forward to working with them and the Government to develop the themes in the document. Together we can help to meet the challenging agenda set by the White Paper by building on this success.'

The Department for Education and Skills is holding regional events, taking take place between 11 March and 10 April, as part of the consultation on the White Paper. Further information is available from the event registration web page.

Grant letter

The Secretary of State for Education and Skills has set out the resources and priorities for higher education for 2003-04 to 2005-06 in the grant letter to HEFCE. The HEFCE Board will discuss the contents of the grant letter at its meeting tomorrow (Thursday 23 January). We expect to make a further announcement after that meeting.

An electronic publication on the Board's response to the DfES funding announcement 2003-04 and 2005-05 was published on 28 January 2003.
