HEFCE welcomes new CUC guide for governors

HEFCE welcomes the latest edition of the Committee of University Chairmen's (CUC) guide for governors in higher education institutions, which for the first time includes a code of governance.

At the launch event on 17 November Dr David Fletcher, University of Sheffield Registrar and Secretary and Secretary of CUC, said:

"The UK and international higher education landscape is changing at an unprecedented rate, and it's vital that British universities are governed in a way that equips them to be alert and responsive to changing market conditions - while still remaining true to the core principles, ethics and values of higher education."

The CUC brings together chairs of governing bodies of all universities in the UK to support the HE sector in developing the highest standards of governance. 'Guide for Members of Higher Education Governing Bodies in the UK' (2004/40) is available from HEFCE. A shorter version, which contains only the governance code of practice and general principles, is also available as HEFCE 2004/40a.
