New appointments to HEFCE strategic committees

HEFCE has appointed new members to its five strategic advisory committees.

Commenting on the appointments, Tim Melville-Ross, Chair of HEFCE, said:

'I'm delighted to announce these changes. HEFCE's strategic advisory committees have an important part to play in policy development. These new appointments provide us with a rich source of advice and support from the higher education sector and other areas of public life.'

The appointments are spread across 24 institutions and represent a reasonable spread from across the country.

Teaching Quality and the Student Experience Strategic Advisory Committee

New appointments to 2011

  • Professor Ella Ritchie. Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Learning and Teaching, Newcastle University. Member, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education Framework for Higher Education Qualifications Advisory Group and the Burgess Implementation Steering Group.
  • Dr Jane Grenville. PVC for the Student Experience, University of York. Experience as a Commissioner for English Heritage and of a QAA full inspection.
  • Ms Elizabeth Rouse. Pro-Rector for Academic Development and Quality, University of The Arts London. Substantial institutional experience: Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning projects; Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; application for university title; revision of its quality assurance processes.

  • Professor Margaret Price. Head of Learning and Teaching, Oxford Brookes University.
  • Professor Barry Jackson. PVC, Middlesex University.
  • Professor Patricia Broadfoot. Vice-Chancellor (VC), University of Gloucestershire.

  • Professor Graham Henderson. VC, University of Teesside, with specialist academic expertise in applied statistics and operational research.
  • Professor Gerald Pillay. VC, Liverpool Hope University, with experience of universities in South Africa and New Zealand.

  • Mr David Allen (to 2011). Registrar, University of Exeter. Former chair, Association of Heads of University Administration.
  • Mr Allan Larsson (to 2010). Chairman, Lund University, Sweden. Former Director-General, European Commission.
  • Professor Paul O'Prey (to 2011). VC, Roehampton University, with experience of higher education institution leadership.

New appointments to 2011

  • Colin Monk. PVC for Business and Marketing, University of Brighton.
  • Millard Parkinson. Head of Higher Education and Trans-national partnerships, St Helens College.
  • Ellen Miller. Head of Academic Relations, Lehman Brothers.

New appointments to 2010

  • Dr Steve Gaskin. Head of Skills, Exeter University.
  • Professor Cliff Hardcastle. Head of Academic Relations, University of Teesside.
  • Linda Pollard (co-option to 2010). Pro-chancellor, University of Leeds. Board-level experience in private, public and voluntary sectors.

  • Ceri Nurshaw (to 2009). Head of City and Regional Office, University of Leeds.
  • Geoffrey Crossick (to 2010). Warden, Goldsmiths College, University of London.

  • Professor Julia Goodfellow. VC, University of Kent. Former Chief Executive Officer, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
  • Professor Ian Leslie. PVC for Research, University of Cambridge.

  • Professor Janet Finch (one-year extension on continuity grounds). VC, Keele University.

  • Professor Rod Coombs (co-option). Vice-President for Innovation and Economic Development, University of Manchester.

  • Colin Mellors. PVC, University of York. Director for Higher Education Strategy, Yorkshire Regional Development Agency (Yorkshire Forward).
  • Julian Skyrme. Head of Undergraduate Recruitment and Widening Participation, University of Manchester; remit includes overseeing outreach, scholarships and bursaries.
  • Professor Susan Price. Deputy VC, University of East London, with strategic responsibility for widening participation.
  • Professor Susan Piotrowski. PVC, Canterbury Christ Church University, with strategic responsibility for widening participation.
  • Professor Sally Glen. PVC, University of Wolverhampton; involved with AimHigher and Lifelong Learning Network initiatives.
  • Professor Eric Thomas (previous co-optee). VC, University of Bristol.
  • Chris Moorcroft (previous co-optee). Principal, Worcester College of Technology. Chair, Association of Colleges' Higher Education Group.
  • Anthony McClaren (co-option). Chief Executive, UCAS.
