HEFCE improves engagement with institutions

23 May 2008

HEFCE has appointed three associate directors as part of a new organisational structure to help manage relationships with universities and colleges more effectively. The holders of these new positions will work with HEFCE regional consultants and others in the Council to develop and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with our stakeholders both regionally and nationally.

The associate directors are Yvonne Hawkins, Chris Millward and David Noyce. Yvonne previously worked at the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Polytechnic and Colleges Funding Council. David and Chris are currently working as HEFCE regional consultants.

Professor David Eastwood, Chief Executive of HEFCE, said:

'Recent Ipsos MORI surveys demonstrate that we already have very good relationships with higher and further education institutions and other key stakeholders, but working in partnership is central to everything we do and we still want to improve.

'These appointments and the new organisational arrangements will enable us to build on a strong base and adapt to changing circumstances, while continuously improving what we do in a cost-effective way.

'The changes will also enable us to respond positively and creatively to the policy environment and improve our dealings with government departments, in particular the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. They will also enable us to make the most effective use of our greatest resource - our staff'.

Under the new arrangements HEFCE has moved from a four to a three directorate structure. The previous structure was created mainly to respond to the challenges of the Higher Education White Paper.

John Selby continues as the Director for Education and Participation; Steve Egan remains as Deputy Chief Executive and Director for Finance and Corporate Resources, including lead responsibility for leadership, governance and management; and a vacancy is currently being filled for the post of Director for Research, Innovation and Skills following Rama Thiranamachandran's appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Keele from 16 June.
