JANET wins e-Government Shared Services Award

24 January 2008

The UK academic network, JANET has won in the shared services category of the e-Government National Awards 2007, announced on Tuesday 22 January (Note 1). The awards recognise the UK's best e-government and technology-driven services.

HEFCE has been encouraging the higher education sector to take continued advantage of shared services in an effort to improve their quality and cost-effectiveness, and to release resources that will support their teaching and research. This is in line with the Government's vision for a long-term transformation of public services that it set out in 2005.

The higher education sector has been using shared services for many years, some dating back to the 1970s. The JANET network first went live in 1984 and has continually developed and grown since then. SuperJANET5, which was launched in 2006, puts higher education at the forefront of communications infrastructure in the UK.

Professor David Eastwood, Chief Executive of HEFCE, said:

'Congratulations to JANET on winning this prestigious award. The higher education sector has a long established record of shared services in many areas, including computer networking, the applications process and data collection. This award demonstrates the sector's commitment to efficiency, savings and enhanced services through the use of technology to link universities and colleges in the UK and overseas.'

Further information about the award is given on the JANET(UK) web-site.

Notes

1. JANET was a joint winner in this category with the Scottish Government: e-Procurement Scotland Service.
