HEFCE has welcomed a report by the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) which records that universities spent a quarter of their additional fee income on access measures in 2006-07.
The report sets out the outcomes of OFFA's annual monitoring of access agreements for 2006-07. In this year, £120 million was allocated for bursaries and additional outreach work - more than a quarter of institutions' additional fee income from variable tuition fees. This was an important supplement to the £92 million that HEFCE provided for outreach work in grants to institutions and the £83 million through the Aimhigher programme. It shows the sector's very substantial commitment to reaching out to disadvantaged students and communities and to widen participation in higher education. HEFCE will continue to work closely with OFFA to support the sector in the achievement of these objectives.
