Results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise show that 54 per cent of UK research activity falls into the top two grades of 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
The 2008 exercise looked at research conducted by 52,400 staff submitted by 159 universities and colleges.
The results show that the UK continues to set a high global watermark, with 'world leading' research well distributed throughout the sector, and 87 per cent of research recognised as of international quality.
