Aaron Porter appointed observer to HEFCE Board

04 October 2010

Aaron Porter, National President of the National Union of Students (NUS), has been made an observer to the Board of HEFCE. This is the first time that an observer from the NUS has been appointed to the Board. The appointment starts with immediate effect and, as a personal appointment, will last for the duration of his term in office.

Aaron Porter was elected President of the NUS in June 2010 for an initial 12-month term after serving two years as Vice-President.

HEFCE Chair, Tim Melville-Ross, said:

'I am delighted to welcome Aaron Porter as an observer to the HEFCE Board. As a guiding principle HEFCE looks to protect the interest of students. Aaron will be able to witness how we follow this principle and how it applies to our current and future policies.'

Aaron Porter said:

'At a time of great change in higher education the need for greater accountability of funding decisions means increased powers of scrutiny for the students which colleges and universities exist to serve. I look forward to the opportunity to observe at close hand the workings of HEFCE to ensure the interests of students are at the heart of future deliberations on funding.'

The HEFCE Board has 15 members. The other three existing observers to the Board are the Chief Executives of the Scottish and Welsh higher education funding councils and the Deputy Secretary of the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland.
