The Office for Students will, subject to legislation currently in Parliament, be the single regulator for a diverse and world-leading higher education sector, promoting student choice, quality and social mobility. It is anticipated that the Office for Students will be formally established from April 2018.

Tim Melville-Ross, Chair of HEFCE, said:

'Today’s announcement is an important stage in the creation of the Office for Students. We look forward to working closely with Sir Michael during the transition to the new body.  We will share our experience and expertise with him as he develops his plans for the future.

'Sir Michael brings considerable knowledge of higher education and an extensive track record of working successfully with Government. The Office for Students will undoubtedly benefit from his wide experience and leadership during this period of reform.'
