Subject to Parliamentary approval of the Higher Education and Research Bill, Research England will be established as one of nine Councils within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
David will continue at HEFCE until the end of March 2018, while working as part of the shadow UKRI executive team to set up the new body, which will open its doors in April 2018 (Note 1).
HEFCE’s Chief Executive, Professor Madeleine Atkins, said:
‘I’m delighted that David has been appointed Executive Chair Designate of Research England. He has done a superb job in driving the research policy agenda, in particular through his leadership of the development and implementation of the first Research Excellence Framework.
‘I am pleased that we are not yet saying a final goodbye to David. He will continue in his current role at HEFCE until the end of March 2018.
‘Under David’s chairmanship, I am confident that Research England will develop strong relationships with the Office for Students, driving innovation and excellence across both organisations’ shared research and teaching agendas.’
