The letter was sent by Councillor Joe Rayment, a member of Bath and North East Somerset Council, as he has said publicly.

HEFCE is dealing with Councillor Rayment’s letter in line with our Public Interest Disclosure (PID) process. We are making initial enquiries and have written to the University of Bath in this connection.

Last month, HEFCE published a report which was critical of aspects of governance at the University of Bath.

Professor Madeleine Atkins, Chief Executive of HEFCE, said:

'HEFCE has provided guidance on how the universities that we regulate should approach remuneration and severance issues for senior staff. We require higher education institutions and their independent auditors to report annually and we investigate whether there is evidence of poor governance or financial mismanagement.'

Update, 2 February 2018:  HEFCE has now concluded these enquiries.
