Dear Vice-Chancellor or Principal
Performance indicators - measures of location
In the performance indicator publication last year, we said that we would be looking at ways of measuring location effects for institutions (see HEFCE 00/40, Annex A2, paragraph 11). Annex A to this letter sets out the work that has been done, and how we propose taking it forward.
We propose to include a second benchmark in the widening participation tables, which will take account of the region of domicile of the institution's students. This benchmark, the location-adjusted benchmark, will provide extra information about the reasons why institutions have different access indicators.
The values of this new benchmark for your institution are included at Annex B, alongside the original benchmarks. We propose to add this information to the PI tables on our web-site during February.
Please send any comments you may have about the proposals to Judy Akinbolu, HEFCE, Northavon House, Coldharbour Lane, BRISTOL, BS16 1QD, or by e-mail to j.akinbolu@hefce.ac.uk.
The deadline for comment is 25 January 2002.
Yours sincerely
Howard Newby
Chief Executive
