Circular letter number 31/2005
Dear Vice-Chancellor or Principal
Maintaining business at HEFCE
This is to notify you of the arrangements we have put in place at HEFCE to manage business following Sir Howard Newby's departure as Chief Executive on 31 January 2006 until a permanent successor is appointed.
The arrangements will ensure that business will continue as usual from 1 February and we will maintain a high quality service to universities, colleges and other stakeholders. We will also, as far as possible, continue to hold and support previously planned meetings and events. Our annual conference on 10 and 11 April 2006 will focus on the vital issue of the future investment and funding needs of the sector. This will be an important input into the comprehensive spending review process.
The HEFCE Board agreed at its meeting on 3 November that Steve Egan, HEFCE's Director of Finance and Corporate Resources, will be appointed as Acting Chief Executive following Sir Howard's departure until a permanent replacement is found. The selection process is well under way and the Board hopes to consider a recommendation on the new appointment at its February meeting.
Robin Jackson, our Regional Consultant for London, has been appointed as Acting Director for Corporate Resources. In this role he will have responsibility for the Analytical Services Division and Organisational Development. He will also oversee Leadership Governance and Management and the South East and South West regional teams.
Ian Lewis, Head of Finance, will take over Steve's role as Principal Finance Officer (PFO). During Robin Jackson's absence from the London Team that team will be managed by Derek Hicks. He will be supported by Clair Murphy who will become deputy regional consultant. Derek Hicks will remain HEFCE regional consultant for the East of England.
These arrangements will end when the new Chief Executive takes up his or her appointment.
Yours sincerely
David Young
Chairman
