Review of Postgraduate Education Evidence Volume

Section 1 - Preface

Section 2 - Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES)
Postgraduate Education in England: Report of a 'Dipstick' Survey

The CHES report 'Postgraduate Education in England (A small-scale survey)', commissioned for the review, is published in section 2. This report provides information from eight case studies of higher education institutions, covering: institutional and student aims; administrative and planning procedures for postgraduate (pg) courses; the pg research experiences offered in institutions; and how pg provision fits with institutional missions more generally for teaching and research.

Sections 3-7 - Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research (CEDAR) Literature Reviews

Literature reviews relevant to pg policy and planning conducted by CEDAR, commissioned for the review, are published in sections 3-7. These cover: 'The purposes of pg education' (section 3); 'Postgraduate planning' (section 4); 'Commentary on past policy statements' (section 5); 'International issues in pg education' (section 6); and 'Financing pg education and training: some notes and issues from Australia, France, Belgium, the United States and Canada' (section 7).

Sections 8-9 - Report of the Academic and Research Base Employers' Task Force

Report of the Employers' Task Force

The review established two task forces to consider employment aspects of pg education, and particularly to contribute to its development of conclusions on the future size, shape and structure of pg education. The 'Report of the Academic and Research Base Employers' Task Force' , which is published at section 8, focusses on the relevance of pg education and qualifications to the academic and research base, primarily higher education institutions and public or non-profit-making research institutes. The 'Report of the Employers' Task Force' , which is published at section 9, considers the relevance of pg education and pg qualifications to all other sectors of employment.

Section 10 - Written and Oral Evidence in response to the Call for Evidence

A list of all the organisations and individuals who provided oral or written evidence to the review (the latter in response to the call for evidence 'HEFCE, CVCP, SCOP Review of Postgraduate Education' HEFCE Circular M 14/96, published in June 1995) is provided in section 10.
