Executive summary

Purpose

1.    This document presents tables showing all students who are registered at institutions in England and are studying for a higher education qualification, by the geographical area in which the learning takes place. It is the first of an annual series.

Key points

2.    Information is derived from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Individualised Learner Record (ILR) collections.

3.    Those on distance learning courses, on their sandwich year out, or postgraduate researchers are not included.

4.    The broad subject groups used are based on the Joint Academic Coding System (JACS). The headcounts are rounded to the nearest five. The full-time equivalents (FTEs) are rounded to one decimal place, not because they are that precise but because the decimal is a useful reminder that the table is of FTEs rather than headcounts.

5.    The numbers registered at higher education institutions (HEIs) are based on standard HESA populations. The numbers registered at further education colleges (FECs) are derived from the LSC's ILR data but we have taken only those records that HEFCE would define as relating to HE students.

6.    The FTEs for double and triple combinations of subjects are apportioned and assigned to the relevant subject areas. The headcounts are not apportioned in this way, each being attributed to one subject area only.

7.    Regions and LSC sub-regions are determined by where a student is taught, not where a student is registered. If a campus is specified, its geographical location is used. Students franchised to an unidentified teaching institution (other UK institution, other non-UK institution or UK FEC not specified), or to an institution in a non-English region, are grouped together.

8.    For partially franchised students the FTEs are split between the institutions they attend. The headcounts are attributed to the institution that does most of the teaching.

9.    FEC provision is assumed to take place at the site with the administrative centre, so that no account is taken of franchising from FECs or of their campuses.

10.    The campus data are restricted because some HEIs do not return campus data on their student record. Campus information is available for HEIs only. Tables featuring campuses do not show the main campuses.

11.    The data include only those students that are registered in England. Students franchised to an English institution from outside England are excluded.
