Space Management Group: phase two reports
Effective space management in universities and colleges can both save money and bring benefits for students and staff. The UK Higher Education Space Management Group (SMG) aims to provide tools to help HEIs manage their space in an efficient and sustainable way that meets their pedagogic, research and support needs.
The following outputs from the second phase are available on the SMG web-site:
2006/38 Space utilisation: practice, performance and guidelines. This report reviews practice and performance in space utilisation and develops additional guidelines for taking a more strategic approach to utilisation.
2006/39 Managing space: a review of English further education and HE overseas. This study considers approaches to space management outside the UK higher education (HE) sector, to see how they might contribute to UK HE space management guidance. It investigates the method used by the Learning and Skills Council to assess space needs in the further education sector in England, and researches examples of HE space planning and management in other parts of the world.
2006/40 Review of space norms. This study researches the scope for providing updated space norms for the HE sector. It sets out a method using principles similar to those underpinning space norms to calculate indicative space needs based on higher education institutions' (HEIs') own particular profiles of academic activity and methods of delivery.
2006/41 Case studies. This report brings together three case studies which explore different aspects of space management in individual institutions. The case studies focus on issues highlighted during the survey of space management practice in Phase One of the Space Management Project and in feedback from Space Management Group seminars.
2006/42 Space Management Project: Summary. An overview of the work of the Space Management Project.
The previous two reports from Phase two of the project.
