Building capacity for change: research on the scholarship of teaching

Summary

This report provides a review of the range and depth of pedagogic developments associated with the scholarship of teaching in higher education. The review was undertaken for the benefit of HEFCE and other bodies that have a direct interest in the scholarship of teaching, including: higher education institutions, the Institute for Learning and Teaching, the Learning and Teaching Support Network and the Higher Education Staff Development Agency.

The report explores the relationship between pedagogic development (PedD) and pedagogic research (PedR) as supported through the various strands of the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund (TQEF), the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Teaching and Learning Research Programme. The report provides a systematic review of the literature on the scholarship of teaching and takes into account the views of working groups (such as those on PedR and on teaching and research) and policy statements. The report is informed by interviews with practitioners and key individuals within higher education institutions, and key stakeholders such as the funding bodies and research councils.

Examples of good practice such as staff development policies that encourage an integrated approach to the development of the teacher/researcher in higher education, and support the scholarship of teaching are included with the report.
