Options for higher education in Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire

Summary

1.    This study reviews the actual and potential demand for higher education provision based in Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire. It also provides an appraisal of the options for meeting that demand. Higher education institutions (HEIs), further education colleges (FECs) and local representatives from each of the three counties discussed the proposals at a workshop in Telford in December 2004, and each county group has begun to consider the ways forward.

2.    The work involved:

  • a review of recent reports and papers prepared on HE in the three counties
  • study of socio-economic statistics and documents
  • consultations with all HEIs and FECs in the three counties
  • consultations with employers, business organisations, the strategic health authority and economic development agencies.

3.    This was a jointly sponsored study between HEFCE, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, Advantage West Midlands, the Government Office for the West Midlands, the Learning and Skills Council, and the Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority.
