Non-disclosure and hidden discrimination in higher education
(Equal opportunities and diversity Project 2)
Summary
The Institute for Employment Studies undertook this anonymous survey project, building on a number of initiatives currently in place. The specific focus was on those staff who feel unable to disclose information about themselves to their employers for monitoring equal opportunities (for example about ‘hidden’ disabilities or sexual orientation). The findings establish a baseline of staff attitudes to inform and monitor HEFCE’s diversity programme. It does so in the context of the equal opportunities framework in HE and the need to elucidate how hidden inequalities affect different groups at work.
The study is part of a wider equal opportunities research programme, commissioned by the funding councils for England, Scotland and Wales.
