Impact of selective funding of research in England, and the specific outcomes of HEFCE research funding

Summary

This report is about HEFCE’s mainstream quality-related research funding (QR), and its impact on research behaviour and performance. QR is a core part of research support, has been shown to have pervasive effects, and is widely discussed in the higher education community. It almost certainly has a critical relationship with the performance of the UK research base, which is excellent. This report reviews what is currently known and leads to a summary of areas where additional evidence might fruitfully be acquired.
