Demand for flexible and innovative forms of higher education
Summary
HEFCE commissioned consultants SQW Ltd, in partnership with Taylor Nelson Sofres, to investigate the demand for flexible and innovative types of HE. The study was concerned with flexibility in the timing and pace of learning.
SQW visited 10 higher education institutions to consult on non-traditional delivery of teaching and learning. Two models of delivery emerged: modular systems, allowing students to extend their studies over longer periods; and accelerated degrees. These approaches were then tested with focus groups of school pupils, undergraduates, mature students, young people under 21 qualified to study at HE level but not studying, and people aged 25-35 in full-time employment (with and without a first degree).
