Evaluation of Project Capital rounds 1 and 2: 1999-2004

Summary

HEFCE has made project capital allocations for capital and IT infrastructure in support of learning and teaching and research since 1999. This evaluation covers the first two rounds of funding for projects that supported learning and teaching. The allocations were £90 million for Round 1 and £158 million for Round 2.

The evaluation was undertaken by reviewing the original project definition forms approved for funding, reviewing a sample of 76 projects across 32 higher education institutions, and examining national statistics on the trends in higher education over the five-year period. The report concludes that the funding has been used successfully to achieve the outputs and outcomes set for the projects, and that institutions have responded very positively to the original objectives set by the Secretary of State.
