Sustainability carrots and sticks: the benefits and risks of sustainable development for HEIs

Summary

This report outlines the sticks related to sustainable development for higher education institutions (the threats, risks and pressures that they will need to prepare for), and the carrots (the opportunities and benefits that sustainability can offer them).

It concludes that often the threats and opportunities are two sides of the same coin. They include opportunities to reduce consumption of resources; to become 'pathfinders' for sustainable communities; to foster sustainability-related knowledge and skills among students; and to lead the field in research.
