Scoping study for a strategic review of sustainable development in higher education

Summary

As the first part of a two-stage strategic review of sustainable development in higher education in England, we commissioned SQW Ltd to carry out a scoping study for the work.

We are committed to establishing a baseline assessment of how the higher education (HE) sector contributes to sustainable development by 2008, as part of our strategic plan to 2011.

We have four aims in the strategic review. It will require data gathering and the opening up of debate on the wider issues. The aims are:

  • to establish a baseline of activity in the sector as a whole, which can be used to identify trends over time and to publicise what the sector is doing already
  • to learn from institutions' experience about what helps and hinders the embedding of sustainable development
  • to identify key strategic issues which present opportunities or challenges for the sector and investigate potential co-ordinated policy responses
  • to evaluate our approach and refine our priorities in promoting sustainable development.
