Scoping study on the use of bibliometric analysis to measure the quality of research in UK higher education institutions
Summary
This scoping study sets out the potential for using bibliometric analysis, that is, analysis of how frequently a piece of research is cited by other researchers, in the evaluation of academic research in the context of HEFCE's current work to develop a new research assessment and funding framework to replace the Research Assessment Exercise after 2008.
This report has informed HEFCE's proposals for the Research Excellence Framework ('Research Excellence Framework: consultation on the assessment and funding of higher education research post-2008', HEFCE 2007/34).
The study provides a comprehensive presentation of advanced bibliometric techniques that could be used to build a set of indicators for assessing research performance in science-based disciplines. The study also presents common problems and potential solutions involved in applying bibliometric techniques.
