This report investigates the population of small to medium-sized enterprises (SME) in the areas covered by the 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships in England. The report was commissioned by HEFCE from the Enterprise Research Centre (ERC).

HEFCE has worked with ERC to produce six maps from the report data that show the current SME population across England by size, sector distribution, and growth and innovation levels.  The report and maps are intended to help universities and colleges in identifying opportunities to collaborate with more SMEs, and to understand and contribute further to the local economy. Further research into innovation and enterprise can be found at the ERC website.

Findings from the report and maps will feed into broader evidence about effective university-business links.
