Making your data work for you: Data quality and efficiency in higher education

Summary

The report was commissioned from PricewaterhouseCoopers to help ensure that the main users of institutional data are working together efficiently and with optimal regulatory impact in terms of data requirements; and that institutional data is timely and of high quality. The report identifies: the main burdens and operational barriers to delivering the HESA staff and student returns; improvements to the existing process; and a road map to implement the improvements.

The key findings from the report are that:

• some good practices exist widely across the sector, but others only rarely; thus there is huge scope to achieve a wider adoption of more elements of good practice
• there are numerous ideas and considerable enthusiasm from institutions for making current practice better
• institutional performance would be improved and the burden on the sector reduced by achieving a wider adoption of more elements of good practice and the implementation of some or all of the better practice proposals.
